GTA Braces For Another Violent Storm As Bizarre Weather Yo-Yo Continues/Pools Open

It’s too soon to say exactly what the summer of 2008 will really be like, although forecasters have already predicted it will be hotter than normal.

But if this spring is any indication, it might be a season best remembered as toying with you more like a yo-yo than an Easy Bake Oven. And that bizarre up and down pattern will be in evidence again, after another topsy-turvy day in the GTA.

On Thursday, some were actually shivering at night as a brisk breeze made temperatures feel a lot colder than the 20.3C reached at Pearson International Airport. Less than 24 hours later comes one of those strange Toronto turnarounds that will see readings soar to 30C, with humidex values making it feel like a sticky 36 or 37 much of the day.

That’s led the Ministry of the Environment to issue a smog advisory for the GTA, including Toronto, Halton, Peel, Durham and York regions. It means deteriorating air quality can be expected at least until the cool down and rain arrives to wash all that air bound gunk away.

But unlike last weekend, the heatwave won’t last long. A cold front will move in behind the humid air mass and the two fronts will collide, leaving us with some very unsettled conditions and the possibility of some violent weather moving in.

Thunderstorms are expected to arrive by nightfall and last into part of Saturday, with the potential for high winds and lightning. But the weekend won’t be a total washout. The sun should make a belated appearance on Saturday and into Sunday, although there’s a risk of more thunderstorms to end your days off.

It will feel a lot cooler though, with pleasant highs of 25C and 26C.

And then we go back on that strange roller coaster, as temperatures deflate by the middle of next week. The long range forecast calls for a high of just 19C on Wednesday, with continuing below normal readings for the rest of the week. It should be about 24C this time of year.

All of which is setting us up for an uncertain summer. The sizzling season is scheduled to begin in exactly a week on June 20th. And if the spring is any sign, we could be in for a wild ride.
