Frank McCourt Dies At 78

Irish author Frank McCourt has died of cancer in New York City at age 78.
McCourt passed away Sunday afternoon at a Manhattan hospice, gravely ill with meningitis and recently treated for melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer.
He was best known for the Pulitzer Prize-winning Angela’s Ashes, a memoir about his impoverished childhood in Ireland, published in 1996.
He wrote it after retiring from teaching high-school English in New York City. It was in instant hit and was made into a movie starring Emily Watson.
His other books include Tis and Teacher Man.
