Jack Layton to undergo hip surgery on Friday

TORONTO, Ont. – NDP leader Jack Layton is scheduled to undergo surgery for a fractured hip Friday.

Layton has been using crutches to get around Parliament Hill for the past several weeks, thanks to a hairline fracture in his hip.

Doctors initially believed the bone would heal itself, but the nagging injury developed into to a full fracture instead.

NDP officials told 680News the surgery will take place mid-day at Mount Sinai Hospital.

Layton is expected to be up and moving around by Friday night, and if all goes well, he’ll be back home by Monday.
