Former U.S. President Bill Clinton was hospitalized in New York City, Thursday.
After experiencing chest pains, the 63-year-old paid a visit to his cardiologist who then sent him to the Columbia Presbyterian Hospital, where two stents were placed in one of Clinton’s coronary arteries.
CNN’S Dr. Sanjay Gupta explained “[…] in his case there was concern about not enough blood getting to the heart; but, these stents simply open up the arterties again to allow enough blood flow to get through.”
Once the procedure was complete Clinton was said to be “in good spirits and [would] continue to focus on the work of his foundation and Haiti’s relief and long-term recovery efforts,” according to adviser, Douglas Band.
In late 2004 Clinton underwent a successful quadruple heart bypass surgery at the same hospital.
The following year doctors had to remove scar tissue and fluid build-up from the operation.
Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton travelled from Washington to New York, Thursday, to be with her husband as soon as she heard he was in the hospital.
