The federal Liberals have opened the door to non-members, after the party voted in favour of adding a new category called ‘supporters.’
Voting at the Liberal policy convention in Ottawa, the party decided to change their format to allow both members and supporters to participate in parts of the Liberal party’s democratic process.
The new format is intended to draw more people into the party, as the new category of ‘supporters’ will not have to pay a $10 yearly membership fee.
They won’t have the same privileges members do, however, such as not having the ability to hold positions in the party or help pick candidates for the next election.
Supporters will be able to vote for the next party leader, however, which could make a big difference in the upcoming leadership race, ending with a vote in 2013.
