Man in hospital after downtown Toronto stabbing, suspect in custody

A man is in hospital and a suspect is in custody after a stabbing in Toronto’s downtown core.

Toronto police were called to the Gerrard Street East and Yonge Street area around 8:30 p.m. on Thursday for reports of a stabbing.

Officers located one man with stab wounds. He was assessed by Toronto paramedics and rushed to a trauma centre with serious non-life-threatening injuries.

Duty Insp. Jeff Bangild told reporters at the scene that two men in their 20s got into an altercation at the northeast corner of the intersection, leading to one of them being stabbed.

Insp. Bangild said one suspect was taken into custody, adding that the suspect and stabbing victim knew each other.

“We believe it to be an isolated incident,” Insp. Bangild said. “There’s no ongoing threat to the safety of the community at this time.”

Toronto police hope witnesses come forward with information as investigators believe many people were in the area at the time of the incident.
