The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) will host the annual Emancipation Day Underground Freedom Train Ride tonight to mark Emancipation Day on Tuesday.
The event commemorates the abolition of slavery in the British Empire.
In a news release, a TTC spokesperson said it provides a unique, in-person experience to reflect on the dangerous journey that formerly enslaved people took to reach freedom in Canada.
With up to 1,200 participants, the train is open to the public and will leave Toronto’s Union Station at 11:45 p.m. and arrive at Downsview Park Station at 12:15 a.m. on Tuesday.
“On behalf of the board, I thank Blackhurst Cultural Centre and the TTC team for organizing this meaningful and engaging experience, celebrating freedom, and supporting our ongoing efforts to confront anti-Black racism,” said TTC Chair Jon Burnside.
An event at Downsview Park Station runs from 12:10 to 12:45 a.m. tomorrow.
