A student at a Newmarket high school is recovering in hospital after they were seriously injured in an undisclosed incident, leading to a brief lockdown on Monday.
York Regional Police confirmed with CityNews that officers responded to Sacred Heart Catholic High School just before 10:30 a.m.
Authorities confirmed a student was “found with an injury” and was rushed to a local hospital in serious but stable condition. The age and gender of the student was not immediately apparent.
York Regional Police said the lockdown was in place at the high school but was lifted just before 11:30 a.m.
“Police cleared the school. There is no risk to public safety,” a police spokesperson said.
It’s unknown if the student was injured inside the school and whether the suspect(s) is a student. The matter is under investigation to determine what happened, the police spokesperson added.
CityNews obtained an email from the York Catholic District School Board (YCDSB) sent to parents and guardians during the lockdown on Monday.
“I wanted to inform you that Sacred Heart is currently in lockdown as a police investigation is ongoing inside the school due to a student injury,” the email reads. “The student has been transported to hospital in serious condition, and their family has been informed.”
“The safety and well-being of our students and staff is our school’s top priority,” the YCDSB said.
