Man, 19, charged with impaired driving after pedestrian fatally struck in North York

A 19-year-old is in police custody after a pedestrian was struck and killed early Monday morning in North York. Shauna Hunt speaks to area residents who were woken up by the sound of the collision.

A 54-year-old man is dead, and a 19-year-old driver has been charged with impaired driving after an early morning crash in North York.

Emergency crews were called to Lawrence Avenue West, just east of Allen Road, around 5 a.m. Monday for reports of a crash involving a pedestrian.

Police say a 54-year-old man was struck by a vehicle while walking on the sidewalk. He was rushed to the hospital with critical injuries, where he was pronounced dead.

Authorities confirmed the driver lost control of the vehicle, mounted the north curb onto the sidewalk and struck the pedestrian.

The driver and three passengers remained at the scene and were not injured.

Police said 19-year-old Shengquan Wang of Toronto was arrested and charged with impaired operation/conveyance/causing death, dangerous operation causing death, and novice driver with a blood alcohol concentration above zero and blood alcohol equal to or over 80 milligrams.

Wang was scheduled to appear in court on Monday morning.

Images from the scene show a badly damaged BMW that appeared to crash into a sign on the side of the roadway, with debris strewn all over the road and sidewalk.
