A woman is dead, and a man is facing a second-degree murder charge following a stabbing at an apartment building in Brampton in what police are calling an intimate partner violence incident.

Peel Regional Police officers were called to a highrise in the Kennedy Road and Chamney Court area at around 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday. Investigators said the call came from a child inside the 12th-floor unit.

Authorities located a woman in her 40s with life-threatening stab injuries. Paramedics told CityNews the female victim was transported to a trauma centre with “penetrating injuries” sustained in an assault.

The woman was pronounced dead in hospital.

A man in his 30s was taken into police custody at the scene, and the homicide unit has taken over the investigation.

“The accused has been charged with second-degree murder and was held for a bail hearing,” a police spokesperson told CityNews.

No other injuries were reported. The investigation is ongoing.

“It’s a crazy world, but for this to happen in the building, it’s wild,” said apartment building resident Terell Jones.
