Blue Jays’ Bo Bichette out for regular season, could return for playoffs

Toronto Blue Jays shortstop Bo Bichette will miss the rest of the regular season with a knee injury but could return for the playoffs, manager John Schneider confirmed on Tuesday.

Bichette, 27, was placed on the 10-day injured list after suffering what the team described as a PCL strain in his left knee. The injury occurred on Sept. 6 during a game against the New York Yankees, when he appeared to tweak the knee while sliding into home plate. He left the game during a rain delay but later returned to finish the contest.

The assessment came from a second opinion the star shortstop received Monday in Dallas from Dan Cooper, a specialist who is also the team physician for the NFL’s Cowboys.

Bichette did some rehab work at the Blue Jays’ Player Development Complex on Tuesday, and Schneider wasn’t certain when he would resume baseball activities, but suggested “probably later this week.”

Bichette in midst of career season ahead of free agency

Bichette has been one of Toronto’s most consistent offensive performers this season, leading the majors in hits and ranking among the league leaders in batting average. His absence has forced the club to rotate Andrés Giménez and Ernie Clement at shortstop.

“When he went on the IL, everyone was asking like, hey, who’s going to step up, and it has to be everyone doing their part and not trying to do something they’re not good at,” said Schneider. “I sound like a broken record, but that’s what’s gotten us to this point. So I think not saying, ‘Woe is me, we lost Bo, who’s hitting fourth and has 90-something RBI’s,’ and it’s just, ‘OK, what can I do today to help?’ Hopefully it’s a couple of guys that (get hot) at the same time, but if it’s a different guy every night, so be it.”

Toronto (89-62) has the best record in the American League and a five-game lead in the AL East over the New York Yankees with 11 games to play. The Blue Jays have gone 7-2 without Bichette in the lineup.

Should the Blue Jays clinch top spot in the AL, it would give them a bye until the ALDS, which is slated to start on Oct. 4.
