York Regional Police say a 23-year-old man has been charged in a fatal, unprovoked attack in Richmond Hill on Wednesday evening.
Officers responded to reports of an assault near Lorraine Street and Bernard Avenue shortly before 5 p.m.
When they arrived, police found the male victim suffering from serious injuries. The man was transported to the hospital in life-threatening condition and was later pronounced dead, according to YRP.
The Office of the Chief Coroner identified the victim as Amir Shafei, 54, of Richmond Hill. He died as a result of blunt force trauma.
Police tell 680 NewsRadio that Shafei was outside near his home when he was attacked by a man he did not know and who does not live in the area.
“The matter is currently being investigated. Our homicide unit has been engaged,” YRP Duty Inspector Ken Golding said at the scene.
Man, 23, charged with second-degree murder
Investigators say 23-year-old Raymond Kim, of Richmond Hill, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder in connection with Shafei’s death.
Police also added that Kim was also charged with two counts of breaching his probation since he was bound by two separate probation orders at the time of the attack on Shafei’s.
No other suspects are being sought. Investigators say they are still working to determine a motive and are appealing to any witnesses who have not yet spoken to police, as well as anyone who may have security video from the area, to come forward.
