Toronto police say they have intercepted 14 unauthorized drones since the FIFA World Cup kicked off in the city, warning operators that strict no‑fly rules remain actively enforced around stadiums, fan zones, and major gathering points.
The updated figures were confirmed to CityNews on Monday, clarifying that all intercepted drones were flown over or near FIFA‑designated areas downtown, including the FIFA Fan Festival Toronto.
The most recent incident occurred on June 21, when officers detected a drone flying over the Fan Festival site. Police say the operator was charged under Canadian Aviation Regulations, bringing the total number of people charged since June 10 to 14.
In a statement, Toronto police reiterated their zero‑tolerance approach:
“Drones are not permitted above or around Centennial Park — no exceptions. Detection tech is in place, and penalties apply. Let’s keep the skies clear.”
Authorities say they will continue to monitor the skies throughout the tournament and lay charges where appropriate.
Later in the day Monday, Toronto police said on social media, another drone had been intercepted in the area of Lake Shore Boulevard West and British Columbia Road near Exhibition place.
An individual was charged with reckless operation under Canadian Aviation Regulations.
