New details emerge in 2012 west-end murder

Edwin Villan became Toronto’s 37th homicide victim of 2012 when his body was found in front of a building in the city’s west end last September.

Six months later, police believe there are witnesses who saw the killer driving around in Villan’s distinctive SUV after the 33 year old was shot dead and left on the front lawn of the Etobicoke building on Midden Crescent, near Eglinton Avenue West and The Westway, around 7 a.m. on Sept. 16, 2012.

Det.-Sgt. Pauline Gray said Monday the suspect drove Villan’s 1998 Nissan Pathfinder, which has distinctive wheel rims and tires, from the area and was seen near Pearson airport in the early afternoon hours of Sept. 17, 2012. The vehicle was set ablaze the next day.

“We’ve been given information there is somebody out there who’s seen this vehicle,” Gray said at a Monday news conference. “My hopes are that they not only saw the vehicle but saw the driver.”

Police haven’t disclosed a possible motive for the murder.

Shortly after the murder, police released an image of a hubcap found at the scene that was believed to have come off the SUV.

The driver was described as white, 30 to 40 years old, about six-feet tall and between 180 and 200 pounds.
