Black Friday Shopping Tips

The day after American Thanksgiving, dubbed Black Friday, is traditionally one of the busiest shopping days of the year, and with the Canadian dollar still standing strong, scores of Canucks are expected to cross the border to take advantage of the deals.

But there’s a few things you should take note of if you plan to make the trek.

-All travellers to the U.S. must present a valid passport at the border.  Other forms of acceptable I.D. include a NEXUS card, A Free and Secure Trade (FAST) card, and an enhanced driver’s licence.

-Same-day shoppers are not exempt from HST and may be subject to paying duty for products not manufactured in North America.

-For general border information, call 1-800-461-9999 (for calls within Canada).  Dial 204-983-3500 or 506-636-5064 for calls outside of Canada (long distance charges will apply).

Longer Visits:

-After 24 hours, you may bring back CAN$50 duty and tax free; after 48 hours, CAN$400; and after 7 days, CAN$750.

-Alcohol and tobacco can be imported free of duty and taxes only if you have been away at least 48 hours: 1.5 litres of wine (53 imperial ounces); or a total of 1.14 (40 ounces) of alcoholic beverage; or up to a maximum of 8.5 litres beer or ale and all of the following – 200 cigarettes (1 carton), 50 cigars or cigarillos, 200 grams (7 ounces) of manufactured tobacco, and 200 tobacco sticks.
