Hannah Montana: The Movie Is Box Office Champ

It was on Sunday that the sneaking suspicion that I might have a problem became crystal clear.
I was discussing the day’s stories with editors and other writers and as always, the weekend box office haul was up for discussion.
We should cover Hannah Montana: The Movie, the producer outlined. It raked in $34 million in just thee days and stars reigning teen queen Miley Cyrus.
“I think she dated one of the Jonas Brothers,” the producer added.
“Nick,” I said, and everybody looked at me.
“And her boyfriend now is like 18,” she tried to continue.
“20! And an underwear model! And he was a contestant on Nashville Star and her Billy Ray dad introduced them and he’s also in the movie but then she was seen with Nick in his car and they got in a fender bender and…”
And there is no real reason I should know any of this. I’m far outside her demographic of elementary school students and young teenagers; I’ve never seen her hit show on the Disney Channel (Hannah Montana); and I have no desire to master the Hoedown Throwdown (seriously, click it).
I think it’s kind of odd that she has an autobiography (she’s only 16), and that her next movie will be based on an as-yet-unwritten novel by Nicholas Sparks (creator of old-people-centred The Notebook and Nights In Rodanthe).
That’s right – the book on which the screenplay will be based is still not yet in print, but Miley is attached. In fact, she commissioned it.
I kind of like that. And I love that she probably came up with the title of her memoirs herself: “Miles To Go,”
I also love that it’s no longer that weird for me to know so much about someone who can’t even drive.
Like Disneybots before her, Miley Cyrus is growing up. She’s on the cover of Glamour magazine (which with headlines like “What To Eat To Lose Eight Pounds This Month” is decidedly (hopefully) not aimed at third-graders), she presented at the Oscars, and she weathered a topless photo scandal.
Which means I may not have a problem after all.
