The Dead Weather, Hollerado Sizzle At Secret Horseshoe Show

It was the kind of night that reminds you there’s a reason some people are rock stars.

Jack White, the musical mind behind The White Stripes and Raconteurs, brought his newest act – The Dead Weather – to the Horseshoe Saturday for a secret show that also happened to constitute the band’s first-ever Toronto date.

No surprise the place was well packed by the time CityNews.ca fav Hollerado, who got the nod directly from White’s people, opened up.

The stellar Montreal four-piece wailed through its air-tight set, no doubt adding a few of the previously unaware to an ever-growing fan base in love with its self-described “acid and piñata party” sound. Then they cleared the way for what had to be one of the darkest, raunchiest and loudest sets the bar has hosted in some time.

White mostly stays behind the drum kit in this latest super group, but the front three of Kills singer Alison Mosshart, Raconteurs bassist Jack Lawrence and Dean Fertita of Queens Of The Stone Age absolutely melted faces at the stage’s edge.

Mosshart’s swagger, her throaty delivery and on-stage chain smoking equaled one sleazy, potent set that won’t soon be forgotten by those close enough to see it.

“I’m pretty sure everyone in here is pregnant,” one fan related when the final feedback was cut following a gripping three-song encore.

And what rocking babies they’ll be.

The Dead Weather return to Toronto for a show at the Kool Haus on July 22. The group’s first album, Horehound, is set for release July 14.
