What should have been the happiest time of her life was marred by tragedy, but an outpouring of generosity from a concerned community has helped brighten the darkest days for Sun Hee Paik.
Paik found herself in the headlines after giving birth to her baby, Mary, in the Wellesley subway station last February. At the time, her 47-year-old husband was a proud father. Shortly after the birth, however, Mary’s father died of a rare blood cancer just one week after diagnosis. Making her story even more tragic, is the fact that a month later, Sun Hee was also diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.
On Tuesday she was presented with a cheque for over $44,000.
“Well thank you everybody,” she said through an interpreter. “She didn’t expect this much help.”
“Even though she lost her husband, she has her children, and she go to church to pray for herself as well as her children so that’s what she keeps her strong.”
With one surgery out of the way, Sun Hee will undergo chemo for two months. Her struggle triggered an outpouring of love and support right across North America.
Sun Hee says the money will go towards buying a car to get the kids around, rent, and of course baby supplies.
