Suspect Killed In Confrontation With York Police

The province’s Special Investigations Unit has been called in following a deadly confrontation between a suspect and police in York Region.

According to the SIU officers went to a house near Mulock Dr. and Leslie St. in Newmarket Thursday afternoon after receiving a break-and-enter call. At some point shots were fired by police and the 27-year-old suspect was fatally struck.

Neighbours believe it was a home invasion.

“The suspect ran into, I believe, it was the home,” contends neighbour Attila Vinczer. “And (the homeowner) phoned the police that there is a man in the house. And what ended up happening from there is the police had arrived, obviously, and shot the man.”

York Regional Police Insp. Mark Brown wasn’t offering many details about the incident, including whether or not the suspect was armed.

“There was a confrontation between one of our officers and the suspect, and again, that’s something that will be released at a further time,” he said.

The suspect is described as a 27-year-old man, but his identity has not been released.

The SIU is called in any time a civilian is hurt or killed in contact with police. There have been seven officers assigned to this latest case. It’s reportedly the third time this year that police in York have been involved in a conflict with a suspect that turned deadly.
