Toronto Cops To Get More Tasers

Toronto Police are getting an extra jolt in their safety – more officers will soon have access to Tasers.

The devices, which shoot out electricity to immobilize suspects, have been highly effective but also controversial. Some critics contend they can do serious harm to those who suffer the shock. But authorities have found them extremely effective and downplay any problems with injuries or deaths.

The Police Services Board agrees, voting to spend a million dollars to purchase 439 of the stun guns.

Cops are pleased they’ll soon have additional protection in their hands.

“What Tasers can do is allow us to use a less lethal force, and in fact it will save lives, and also not create dangerous situations for officers,” maintains Toronto Police Association president Dave Wilson.

Cops argue Tasers benefit both police and culprits, because it gives cops an option that otherwise might leave them no choice but draw their weapons.
