London Digs Out From Heavy Snowstorm

Torontonians woke up to a chilly day in the downtown core, but it’s nothing compared to the blast of winter that hit the southwestern part of the province overnight.

London, Ont. has been buried under 40 centimetres of snow since Thursday and Environment Canada expects another 15 centimetres to fall before Friday ends.

Residents had to grab their shovels and snowblowers to clear their driveways and dig out their cars.

London transit has been shut down, as have buses in Middlesex, Elgin and Oxford counties. Taxis are only accepting calls for emergencies.

All schools in the area were closed, including the University of Western Ontario and Fanshawe College.

Police warn that local roads are treacherous and should be avoided if at all possible – particularly along Highways 401 and 402 from London to Strathroy where there could be whiteouts.

Snowbursts are being blamed for a pileup on Highway 401 near Woodstock Thursday. It involved about 20 vehicles and sent eight people to hospital.

Aside from the blustery conditions in London, Environment Canada has issued snowsquall warnings for Grey-Bruce counties, the Barrie-Orillia region, Huron-Perth and Elgin county.

Here in the city, it’s supposed to warm up over the weekend, with a high of 7 degrees predicted for Sunday.
