Spider-Man 3 Opens

Spider-Man 3, which sees the web-slinging superhero battle bad guys and inner demons, this week smashed records set by the franchise’s previous two outings. The Sam Raimi film starring Tobey Maguire in the lead role pulled in US$29.15 million as it opened in 16 overseas markets. It premieres Friday across North America, and is expected to have a blockbuster weekend here as well. The third film sees Spider-Man battling inner conflicts after an alien entity takes over his superhero outfit. He also has to fend off two new villains: Venom, played by Topher Grace, and Thomas Haden Church as Sandman. Kirsten Dunst returns as Peter Parker’s love interest, and James Franco plays his former friend turned enemy. The two previous films in the hugely successful series have combined to bring in $1.6 billion around the world.
