Two Children Tumble From Apt. Window

It’s that time of year again when the weather warms and parents often leave their windows open. That’s often a recipe for tragedy and on Thursday night, it happened again. Police raced to an apartment on Garden Flaxway in the Jane and Steeles area after reports that two young children had fallen out of a window. The kids, twin three-year-olds, tumbled from the second floor onto the ground below.

Police say they were playing near the window when a screen gave way.

And while many of us were cursing the recent stretch of rainy weather, it may have actually saved their lives.  The ground was very soft and the muddy due to the precipitation, cushioning their falls.

One of the youngsters suffered minor head injuries, the other just a bloody nose. The more seriously injured was sent to the Hospital for Sick Children as a precaution. It’s not clear where the parents were when the accident took place, but officials warn guardians they should be extra vigilant at this time of year.

“We remind parents to childproof their homes and don’t put out furniture that gives children access to windows.  And secure the windows,” advised Sgt. Victor Ramser.

At least 50 children have fallen from windows, balconies and decks in Toronto since 1999. Over half sustained serious injuries or died as a result of those falls.
