Is T.O. Ready To Go Hybrid?

Just a couple of days ago, NYC announced it’ll be the first city in the world to transform its entire fleet of famous yellow taxi cabs to hybrid cars by the year 2012. Toronto has similar plans for going green, but on a much larger scale.

The city is launching a one-year pilot project with the hopes that one day all of Toronto’s vehicles will be battery-powered.

A Toronto-based company has teamed up with City Hall to test 10 hybrid cars to see if they can handle Toronto’s hot summers and withstand the cold winters.

There’s a huge price tag that comes with the environmental experiment. It’ll cost about $12,000 to retrofit each car, but Toronto Mayor David Miller said it’s money well spent, adding that it’s a very effective way to reduce smog and pollution.

“Once it works well, there are savings in repair bills. I think this is a tremendous opportunity for Toronto. It’s not just about doing the green thing it’s about financially doing the right thing,” he said.

This new breed of hybrid cars are expected to reduce C02 emissions by up to 60 percent.
