It’s the second brazen, daytime shooting to shatter glass, peace and quiet in the GTA in as many days, and on Friday, what police believe was an attempted assassination almost claimed the life of an innocent woman who was nearly in the very wrong place at the absolute worst time.
It’s alleged a man was lured into the lobby of an apartment building at 30 Livonia Place, near Neilson and Ellesmere in Scarborough, where at least three shots were fired at him. Security video seems to show the man being hit, but the victim, like his assailants, was nowhere to be found by the time police arrived.
Several children playing in front of the building were sent scattering by the sounds of gunfire, and shaken parents in the area are understandably concerned.
“They have no regards for any children, because there’s kids out here all the time,” said distraught mother Sue McEwan. “It’s disgusting.”
McEwan’s son regularly plays in front of the building, but it was another tenant who narrowly escaped possible death after she headed out the front doors just steps ahead of the bullets’ intended target.
“There was a female witness that walked ahead of the intended victim just before the shots were fired,” said Toronto Police Sgt. Rod Lawrence. “She’s very lucky to be alive.”
Police rushed to the area in numbers after a string of 911 calls, and in an unrelated incident discovered a man across the street walking around with a loaded handgun.
