$50,000 High Tech Bed Not Just For The Sleepy

What do you do in bed? Before your mind wanders to the obvious place, a manufacturer of a new high tech product wants to add to the list of whatever you came up with.

The Starry Night Sleep Technology Bed is a creation that’s more likely to stop you from getting any rest than the other way around. In addition to the usual bed spring and mattress, this high tech wonder comes with built in wireless connectivity, an iPod dock, surround sound speakers, an LCD projector, the ability to install a DVR and dual temperature controls so there’s never any argument over who needs more covers.

It also has what its makers call a snore stopper, which detects the loud vibrations and quietly moves half of the bed up seven degrees until the night noise stops, then gently brings the sleeper back down to the original position.

The device was unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week, where it got a lot more than a yawn. Its creators, Leggett and Platt, chose the venue to prove the CES can be about more than just MP3 players and cell phones.

But paying for it may be enough to make you lose sleep. Depending on which features you choose, it will set you back US$20,000-50,000. The company admits that’s a big wake-up call, but believes owning one will be the answer to a nightmare for some.

“I know it sounds like a lot, but you show me somebody that sleeps in a bed with someone that snores; I will show you a person that thinks $20,000 is a very small amount to pay to solve that problem,” explains spokesman Mark Quinn.

The high tech bed is scheduled to hit the market in the first half of 2009. The ‘rest’ is up to you.
