In his first season with the Maple Leafs Vesa Toskala has actually played pretty well, but a brutal gaffe Tuesday night in a win over the New York Islanders still had teammates laughing and more than a few fans rolling their eyes.
A shot that travelled the length of the rink, seemingly with no chance to bother the Leafs keeper, somehow bounced passed Toskala to open the scoring sending the entire arena into hysterics as the hometown Islanders took the lead.
“I was actually in the corner seeing it bounce the whole way down and I couldn’t believe it,” said forward Alex Steen. “I’ve never seen anything like that live.”
Toskala wasn’t nearly as amused, instead trying to forget all about the silly, and also meaningless goal.
“Honestly I could honestly care less,” he said. “It was just a bad bounce and went in.”
Head coach Paul Maurice also deflected questions from the media about his top keeper.
“I don’t find him to be sensitive,” he said. “He’s got the right personality to play on this team and play in this market.
Toronto’s next test comes against Buffalo Friday in the Queen City.
