Are You Sure You Locked Your Front Door? New System Helps Answer That Question

This article is more than 5 years old.
Before you read this story, chances are you didn’t leave the iron on, the stove at home is turned off and you did lock the front door when you left the house this morning.
Or did you?
If you’re one of those neurotic-types who are never quite sure if they’ve checked everything at home, you’ll like this version of a better mousetrap.
Schlage has introduced a new lock that can be remotely accessed by the Internet to ensure you’ve secured your home when you’re absolutely positive you didn’t.
The new fangled battery operated locks come with traditional keys but also keypads that allow the bolts to be opened and closed using a 4-digit number on a keypad. That’s not so new, but this is – the system can be accessed wirelessly from the Internet or your cell phone, so if you’re sure you didn’t turn that virtual key, you can do it from anywhere in the world.
The locks are fully password protected and the digits can be changed at any time to fool would-be thieves.
The equipment needed to run this new fangled security system costs about U.S.$300 and – here’s where they get you – a monthly $13 fee that lets you continue to use the applications.
It’s not immediately clear if the product will be available in Canada when it’s released in October, but many chains here (like Canadian Tire, Rona and Home Depot) carry the well known Schlage line, and if the idea interests you, it might be worth asking them a few times.
Because if you’re like some of us, you’re already used to checking things more than once.
