Some Hershey’s candy that was recalled in 2006 has been found for sale in the Toronto area, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency warns.
The candy has codes ranging from 6417 to 6455 on the package, Garfield Balsom, a CFIA spokesman, said Thursday.
In November 2006, Hershey’s was forced to recall dozens of products after salmonella was detected at its plant in Smiths Falls, Ont.
The contamination was traced to an emulsifying agent, soy lecithin.
Some of the recalled chocolate was stolen in 2007 from a Toronto recycling depot that had been contracted to receive and dispose of the potentially contaminated products.
It is believed the candy that has appeared on the shelves of some convenience and variety stores is some of the stolen chocolate, Balsom said.
Balsom said no illnesses have been reported.
So far, 640 chocolate bars have been recovered from five Toronto area stores.
No Halloween candy is affected by this warning, said Kirk Saville, a spokesman for Hershey’s.
Hershey’s Halloween packaged candy is safe and no “large retailers” are affected by the warning, Saville said, noting the affected candy is being sold to stores through illegal channels.
