Malls Prepare For The 12 Days (Until) Christmas

Ah, the second-last Saturday before Christmas.
It’s a time of quiet reflection, spending the hours with loved ones as families ponder the true meaning of the season amid softly falling snow.
At least that’s the image played on the multiple TV screens lining the hallways at the mall.
For many people, this time of year is best spent battling others for that last available parking spot, then deciding whether it’s worth it to wear your parka for the long walk to the entrance only to swelter for hours once inside the overheated stores.
Decisions, decisions.
Shoppers are making a lot of them this year, tasked with either finding the Most! Unique! Gift! Ever! Or the most popular toy that sold out weeks ago, but maybe we can backorder it for you, it will arrive in January, is that all right with you?
Needless to say, it’s a hectic time.
To help, malls are open longer – and so is the LCBO. Click here for the extended hours. Some shopping centres even offer valet parking.
Despite the unbridled consumerism that can seem especially rampant this time of year, plenty of us in the GTA are choosing to spend some time – and some hard-earned cash – on those less fortunate. Here’s how you can help.
The Daily Bread Food Bank
The public pantry was used by nearly a million people last year, 34 per cent of who were children. From April 2007 to March 2008, 952,883 people accessed the food bank.
Habitat For Humanity
Volunteer or donate to help build homes right alongside the new owners, needy families who put in ‘sweat equity’ as a down payment. For every 15 homes the organization builds in Toronto, they can build one home per year from the mortgage income alone.
