2009 Black History Month Takes On Special Meaning

At the stroke of midnight black history month will officially begin. And this year, it means that much more.

Many in the city’s black community gathered at a bash in Yorkville to ring in the new month, mindful of the history that was made on January 20th with the inauguration of Barack Obama.

“We’re recognizing the importance of black history pertaining to the past, right now and the future,” noted gala organizer Keda Edwards-Pierre.

Artist Robert Small, who unveiled his latest legacy poster depicting the new U.S. President and other leaders in the black community, agrees.

“Everybody knows when black history month is. Everybody realizes the importance of history when they see a significant moment such as the one with Barack Obama.”
