Watermain Break Shuts Down Midland Ave.

It’s been a bad year for watermains in Toronto.

On Monday, another broken pipeline caused major flooding in the city and this time, it happened on Midland Avenue.

The route was shut down between St Clair and Danforth after water completely covered the roadway way.

Crews quickly shut off the water supply and worked to make repairs. However, drivers were advised to avoid the area in the early morning hours.

One homeowner couldn’t avoid the mess.

“When the water was so high, it went right through,” described Dave Prentice.

“There used to be an old window here so that’s where the water went into that basement. I just opened up the drain and it did flood in there, but I don’t think there’s a lot of damage.

“There will be some but what can you do?”

It happened just a week after a broken watermain created ice rink-like conditions in the Keele and Bloor area Jan. 26.

And on Jan. 12, the westbound lanes of Lawrence Ave. were closed at Yonge after a burst pipe buckled the roadbed.

Though it wasn’t a watermain break, a flood at a Toronto Hydro station caused huge problems Jan. 15.

The water damage at Dufferin substation shorted out the system, causing a massive power outage on one of the coldest nights of the year.
