Cool, Rainy Weather Won’t Dampen Mother’s Day

It’s an event 101 years old and it celebrates something all of us have.

It’s Mother Day and despite the cool and rainy weather here in Toronto, thousands took to the streets to honour their moms.

The many different kinds of families across the GTA meant there were many different kinds of celebrations. From brunch to marathons to political protests, we remembered moms of all stripes

Early Sunday morning, Meagan’s Walk began at Ontario Place. Every year, thousands come out to remember five-year-old Meagan Bebenek (pictured, with mom, Denise) who lost her life to a brain tumour, and to raise money for research.

Walkers, runners, and strollers started at the lake front and made the five kilometre trek to SickKids. Over $1.4 million has been collected to date and this year, organizers hope to raise $400,000.

Meanwhile, women and men who desperately want to become parents made their own plea for funding at Queen’s Park.

An organization called Conceivable Dreams wants OHIP to fund IVF infertility treatments. They’ve scheduled a Pram Push for Sunday and the event is sure to be eye-catching: would-be mothers will be pushing empty baby strollers from Nathan Phillip’s Square all the way to Ontario’s parliament.

Both groups were met with grey skies and cooler temperatures. We saw a high around 11C in the early afternoon, with westerly winds blowing in around 20 kilometres an hour.

The gusts will die down in the evening as the mercury drops to 3C.
