SOCAN (Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada) is currently accepting votes to determine the winner of the fourth annual ECHO Songwriting Prize, a competition aimed at exposing the nation’s best up-and-coming songwriters.
A field of 30 potential winners was chosen by a panel of 10 music community “tastemakers,” who reviewed each of the songs and, using a point-value system, determined the five that will be voted on by the public.
Now you can listen to the songs and vote for your favourite at www.echoprize.ca until Sept. 29. The winner receives a $5,000 prize.
Past winners include “Night Windows,” by Stephen Carroll, John Samson, Greg Smith and Jason Tait (2008), Toronto rapper Abdominal for “Pedal Pusher,” (2007) and Winnipeg punk group Propagandhi for “A Speculative Fiction” (2006).
This year’s panelists included:
Dan Seligman – Pop Montreal

Jill Wilson – The Winnipeg Free Press
Sue Carter Flinn – The Coast
