Oprah Drops In On TIFF

She’s a multimedia powerhouse, hosting a wildly successful talk show 23 years running, operating her own charities and producing and acting in movies for her company Harpo Films.

It’s her latest film that’s brought Oprah Winfrey to Toronto. Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire screens at the Toronto International Film Festival and tells the story of an obese, illiterate teen impregnated twice by her own father.

Described by CityNews.ca as a “tough but ultimately uplifting film about a young woman’s triumph over adversity,” the film was a success at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year and has garnered early Oscar buzz.

At a packed press conference on Sunday, Oprah admitted the film is raw and difficult, but says it’s important to watch because it puts a face to those who have been abused.

She was joined at the table by director Lee Daniels and cast members Mariah Carey, Sherri Shepherd, Paula Patton and Gabourey Sidibe, who was working as a receptionist before she landed the title role.

Precious screens Sunday at 9:30pm at the Roy Thomson Hall and on Monday at 12:30pm at the Winter Garden Theatre.
