With pavilions open along Stephen Avenue and McMahon Stadium seeing final preparations ahead of Sunday’s big game, fans of all stripes are showing up in the city, ready to party.
And by all accounts, the weather is going to be pretty good for the game. 660News Meteorologist David Spence says it’s going to sunny, windy and warm. He adds while the fans in the stands will love the warmth, they should dress warmly because it’s going to get caller as the evening goes on.
But before getting to the game, the fun downtown starts with a pancake breakfast at Olympic Plaza starting at 8:30 a.m. and going until 10:30 a.m.
Flames Central will also be holding the CFL’s Alumni Luncheon today as well.
Then tomorrow, the downtown will be packed once again as the Grey Cup Parade will close streets and snarl traffic in the core. Traffic will also be diverted away from Crowchild Trail around 8:00 p.m. on Sunday. That closure will be between at 16th and 24th Avenue Northwest, and is expected to last for about two hours.
And if you’re headed to the game, it’s expected you’ll see a lot of “melon heads” from the province directly to the east of Alberta. Rider fans are flocking to the city in droves to see their team take on the Alouettes in the big game, prompting a shortage of the big, green, oval fruit in the city.
Safeway says it has a shipment of 25-hundred coming in today, and the Calgary Herald reports Superstore is bringing in between six and 10-thousand melons.
Yes. Those melons are scooped out and people actually wear them on their heads. Wanna do it too? Here’s how:
1. Trace your desired design on the outside of the melon,
2. Cut along the traced line,
3. Scoop it out,
4. Layer the edges and inside with Vaseline to preserve it.
5. Wear it on your head, try not to look foolish.
