A serious crash on Friday resulted in serious injuries and snarled traffic on the 401, just as the first of the cottagers began their trek out of the city.
At about 12:45pm, in the eastbound lanes just past Dixie Rd., a tractor-trailer rear ended an Acura and crushed the back of the car.
The 35-year-old driver suffered only minor injuries but his passenger, a 32-year-old woman, was trapped in the back seat and sustained life-threatening injuries. Once freed by fire crews, she was airlifted to St. Michael’s Hospital. The truck driver was not hurt.
It’s a sobering reminder of the hazards on the highways for motorists beginning their exodus out of town.
And as usual, police were out for the first long weekend of the season cracking down on aggressive and impaired drivers and looking for seatbelt infractions and other safety issues.
“Just coming southbound, I saw a guy slumped over the wheel steering with his forearms. He was talking on a cell phone with one hand and eating an apple with the other,” said PC Liz Newton.
“Take your time. Don’t be in a hurry to get there. And think about your loved ones.”
