Tropical Storm Kills 12 In Jamaica, Four In U.S.

As Tropical Storm Nicole battered the east coast of the United States and claimed four lives, the death toll rose too in Jamaica, where 12 people have now been confirmed dead.

Four people, including two children, died in North Carolina on Thursday after their vehicle slid off U.S. Highway 64 and into a flooded ditch in the eastern part of the state.

And after days of torrential rain in Jamaica, a wall collapsed and killed three construction workers who were sleeping inside a half-built house in Kingston.

Before that, three pedestrians were swept away by rising waters and six family members died when their house collapsed in a flood.

Schools in the country remained closed for a second day with hundreds of thousands of people without power and many cut off by floodwaters. More than 400 people have taken shelter in government-run facilities.

Several flights were cancelled or delayed in Boston and New York-area airports on Thursday and Friday.
