Former Etobicoke mayor throws support behind Ford

TORONTO, Ont. – Mayoral candidate Rob Ford held a press conference outside of the Etobicoke Civic Centre on Monday morning.

During the conference, Ford received significant endorsement from veteran councillor and former Etobicoke mayor,  Doug Holyday.

The support comes as new polls place Ford and George Smitherman in a dead lock around 30 per cent of decided voters, while Joe Pantalone trails behind with 15 per cent.

Ford brushed off these reports and said the only poll that will matter is Election Day on October 25.

Holyday said Ford is the only candidate that can provide real change, finding no significant differences between retiring mayor David Miller, George Smitherman and Joe Pantalone.

“Under Mayor David Miller we have hired 10,000 more people than we started with in 2003. Now, that’s a 25 per cent increase in employees. If we continue to do that going into the future, we’re simply going to go bankrupt. There’s just not enough taxes in the world to pay for this kind of increase in the workforce down there,” he said. “Rob’s plan to cut this back will be done painlessly.”

Meanwhile, the other major mayoral candidates were out and about rallying support.

George Smitherman canvassed the University of Toronto, where he spoke with students.

Endorsers of Joe Pantalone gathered at Pantalone Headquarters to build some “Joe-mentum” around politics, labour and social movements.

Rob Ford will be taking part in a live chat at 2 p.m. on Monday. Listeners can pose questions by visiting the “Toronto Election” tab on 680News. On Wednesday, listeners will also have a chance to submit questions to Joe Pantalone.
