Fallen Soldier’s Flight Home Delayed

The body of the latest Canadian solider to be killed in Afghanistan will return home on Wednesday.

A repatriation cememony will be held for Cpl. Steve Martin at CFB Trenton around 2pm.

Previously, the ceremony was to be held on Tuesday. However, de-icing issues at a Germany airport prevented the plane from leaving as scheduled.

His military transport will be met by Governor General David Johnston, Defence Minister Peter MacKay and Martin’s family.

Martin was killed during a foot patrol when an improvised explosive device went off on Saturday. He was just days short of his next birthday and would have turned 25 on Monday.

Martin, from 3rd Battalion Royal 22e Regiment, was on his second tour in Afghanistan. The military would not say if anyone else was wounded in the bombing that claimed his life.

After the ceremony at CFB Trenton, a procession carrying Martin’s casket will head to Toronto along the Highway of Heroes and will reach the Oshawa area around 3:30pm.

Martin is the 154th Canadian military personnel to die in the Afghan mission, which began in 2002.
