York Region Transit workers avoid strike, settle with Veolia

VAUGHAN, Ont. – Commuters who live and work north of Steeles Avenue no longer have to worry about a transit strike, after transit workers accepted a settlement with Veolia in a 114-83 vote Friday evening.

A four year agreement was signed, which calls for a 10.5 per cent wage increase, a signing bonus of $600 per worker, four paid sick days annually, and more health care benefits, among other objectives.

The re-vote followed a contract offer rejected by York Region Transit bus drivers on February 16. The tentative settlement was reached three days earlier.

This was the second time members of Local 113 of the Amalgamated Transit Union voted on the same deal.

Had a strike taken place, approximately 28,000 riders and 24 bus routes would have been affected, mostly in Vaughan.
