Proof the best things in life are free: Aretha Franklin will open this year’s TD Toronto Jazz Festival with a show that costs nothing.
The Queen of Soul, 69, will perform on June 24, one of her first concerts after recovering from surgery last December.
No doubt fans of her early career will be holding out for late-‘60s hits like Respect, I Never Loved a Man, and Chain of Fools – songs that helped earn her the first spot for a woman in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
The jazz festival will mark its 25th anniversary with 350 concerts and 1,500 musicians, including opera star Jessye Norman, the Dave Brubeck Quartet, and hip-hop band The Roots.
Because of renovations at its usual base, Nathan Phillips Square, organizers have moved the main stage to Metro Hall.
The TD Toronto Jazz Festival runs from June 24 to July 3. For the full lineup and tickets, click here.
