Police officer shot in Lindsay released from hospital

A police officer airlifted to Toronto after a shootout at a suspected crack house in Lindsay, Ont., is back home.

Peterborough Lakefield Police Const. Keith Calderwood was released from St. Michael’s Hospital this weekend.

The 37-year-old officer was rushed to Toronto last Wednesday afternoon after he was shot twice while executing a drug search warrant at a home on Georgian Street in Lindsay, about 130 kilometres northeast of Toronto.

A 21-year-old Toronto man, Corey Armstrong, was shot to death during the raid.

Five people were initially arrested after the incident, but only one woman, 39-year-old Jennifer Nicholson, is currently charged.  She was initially charged with breach of recognizance.  On Monday, charges of possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking and possession of stolen property were added.

The Special Investigations Unit is now probing the case. The provincial agency said at least one of the two bullets that hit Calderwood was fired from a fellow officer’s gun.

Officers from both the Peterborough and Kawartha Lakes forces were involved in the incident.
