Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit has cleared Durham regional police officers of wrongdoing in a shooting incident earlier this month that left one man dead and a baby injured by a bullet.
The SIU statement, released Monday, said officers arrived at the home of Andre Hogg, 22, on July 4 to investigate him on an undisclosed criminal matter.
Officials say Hogg was in the home’s basement with his 13-month-old daughter and the baby’s grandmother.
While police were heading downstairs, they heard gunshots and left the house with the grandmother.
A few minutes later, the baby’s mother went into the home and came outside with the child, who had suffered a bullet wound.
Hogg’s lifeless body was found in the basement along with a handgun, shell casings and a live round.
SIU director Ian Scott said officers never fired their guns in the incident.
“The only reasonable conclusion from the investigation is that Mr. Hogg took his own life by means of a self-inflicted gunshot. Accordingly, there was no police involvement in Mr. Hogg’s death.”
The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
