Union members reject Veolia’s latest offer

There’s still no end in sight in the York Region Transit strike as the union representing Veolia bus drivers rejected the latest offer.
The meeting room was overflowing to the point that it was standing-room only when union president Bob Kinnear made the announcement.
“The only way to get out of this dispute is to either go back to the bargaining table with a reasonable proposal or, as we had proposed the second week of this dispute, put it in front of a neutral third-party arbitrator,” Kinnear said.
Members of the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 113, representing 200 bus drivers and mechanics, voted 75 per cent against the deal.
On Monday, York Region announced it was cancelling their contract with First Canada, one of the service providers.
The region said they will give that contract to another operator, and that some services should return on Feb. 5.
The strike began on Oct. 24, 2011.
