Stamps lock up Paredes, add Australian punter

The Calgary Stampeders locked up a pair of kickers Friday.
Head coach and general manager John Hufnagel announced non-import kicker Rene Paredes has signed a contract extension, while the club also came to terms with Australian punter Scott Crough.
Paredes was 35 of 48 on field goal attempts last season and finished fifth in the CFL in kicking points with 158.
“Rene has the perfect demeanour and confidence needed to be a successful professional kicker,” Hufnagel said in a press release. “He showed his talent and ability last season and we want him to challenge for that starting spot again this upcoming season.”
The Venezuela-born kicker originally signed with the Stamps on July 4 when then starting kicker Rob Maver went down with injury. The 26-year-old started 17 of 18 regular season games for the Stamps last season.
“It has been a whirlwind year for me and I’m thrilled that this ride continues,” Paredes said. “Thanks to the Stampeders for giving me the opportunity and I look forward to being with the team from the start of training camp this season.”
Crough could become the first Australian to ever play in the CFL if he makes the Stamps roster coming out of camp.
The Ballarat, Australia native is a former member of the Bungaree Demons of the Central Highlands Football League, which is an Australian rules football league, and was named its best and fairest player in 2001.
