Steven Del Duca has been nominated as the Liberal candidate for the provincial byelection next month in Vaughan.
Earlier this month, longtime incumbent Greg Sorbara announced he would step down to devote himself to running the Liberals’ election campaign.
Del Duca, who is the public affairs director for the Carpenters’ District Council of Ontario, has also served as Sorbara’s executive assistant and as a senior advisor to MP Joe Volpe.
“Humbled to be the #OLP candidate in #Vaughan. Can’t wait to serve the members of our community as their MPP,” Del Duca tweeted on Sunday.
The byelection will take place on Sept. 6 alongside another in Kitchener-Waterloo.
Progressive Conservative Elizabeth Witmer resigned that seat in April to chair the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board.
If the Liberals win both byelections, they could have regain a majority at Queen’s Park. The NDP and PCs have a combined 53 seats in the legislature. The Liberals currently have 52.
