Tamagotchi, the popular 1990s toy, has come back to life with an Android app.
The original game allowed users to feed and care for a virtual pet, with a real-world twist: the “pets” would die if players missed too many feedings or forgot to clean up.
The hard plastic eggs were a mainstay of key chains at middle schools and high schools since their 1996 debut. (According to manufacturer Bandai, the name is a combination of the Japanese word for egg – tamago – and watch – uocchi.)
Bandai’s new version, called Tamagotchi LIFE (love is fun everywhere) was launched on Google Play Tuesday and will soon be available for iPhone.
The original game was deceptively simple – just three buttons were used.
The smartphone version starts out looking like the original, but, according to technology website TechCrunch, the new version has touch interaction. Users can tap on icons directly to feed, bathe, medicate and scold their pet.
The Tamagotchi can also play Rock, Paper, Scissors – but the pet is only happy if it wins.
