2nd person dies following multi-vehicle crash on Hwy. 404

A second person has died following Tuesday’s six-vehicle crash on Highway 404 that shut down the busy route north of Markham for hours.

The OPP said Lauro Manlangit, 55, of Barrie, died in hospital on Friday. Julius Mascarenhas, 61, of Richmond Hill, died in hospital on Tuesday.

Around 8 a.m. Tuesday a Toyota Camry travelling northbound inexplicably veered into the southbound lanes striking a black Saab and causing a chain reaction crash, OPP say.

In total six vehicles, including a motorcycle, were involved.

Manloangit was the driver of the Saab. A female passenger in the Saab remains in hospital in critical condition.

Mascarenhas was the driver of the Camry.

Police said Friday that the motorcycle driver remains in stable condition, and a man and a woman had minor injuries.

The collision resulted in the closure of Highway 404 from Bloomington Road to Stouffville Road for more than six hours Tuesday.

Further investigation determined that the Camry was cut off by another vehicle during an improper lane change.

Police are looking for witnesses.
