Smog advisory issued for GTA

A smog advisory has been issued for Toronto, Hamilton, Halton, Peel, York and Durham, Environment Canada and Ontario’s environment ministry say.

“This smog advisory hasn’t been issued for traditional reasons, meaning a stagnant air mass, hot sunshine really cooking up pollutants,” CityNews meteorologist Natasha Ramsahai said.

It’s because of the “northeast flow” that’s brought smoke from forest fires in Quebec, she said.

“You might even smell a bit of smoke tonight,” Ramsahai added.

The federal and provincial agencies first issued the smog advisory earlier Tuesday for as far east as Ottawa, and expanded it to the GTA and Hamilton in the late afternoon.

They are warning people with respiratory ailments to limit their outdoor activity while the smog advisory is in effect and that residents take public transit or car pool and refrain from using gas-powered motors.
